For those interested, Larry Breslin just sent me some new photographs of the Flamenco Negra he's building for me. About a month to go before Poca Loca is in my hands! Lovely guitar in the making, I am always inspired when I hear a good flamenco player. We went to a private performance a couple of years ago in Seville with Eva Yerbeuena and Sara Baras dancing with a half dozen "students", Elena Andija and "Guadiana" were singing with Jose Jimenez "Viejin" and Ramon Jimenez Ramirez playing guitars. I had a good look and try of Jose's guitar, it was so light I had to keep looking at it to remind me I was holding anything. It almost felt on the point of collapse, which is how I like my guitars. One of those is on my the list for building in 2007 in cypress though and with pegs. I've already got the Cypress B&S set and top ready. Colin |

Zoot- Whenever I order an instrument from Larry, I always approach the day of wood-selection with a certain amount of pleasure and pain. Picking a top and back set from his stock is tough to do; he always tries to asssure me that quality control has already been performed, so there aren't any bad sets. I realize this, but it doesn't seem to make the selection process any easier! |

Larry's classical design is very light to begin with, especially the Nomex double-top; his flamenco is even lighter. Everything is brought to the edge of tolerance, including the top, sides, side bracing, etc. However, this negra will be a little heavier simply because of the rosewood back/sides. I considered a very traditional cypress design, which is Breslin's standard, but my playing style and usual material is a little more lyrical and "classical" in nature, less percussive. I also like a slightly darker overall timbre, so Larry suggested a negra with Englemann instead of a cypress/euro spruce instrument. |

I've played two tremendous Breslin flamencos, a negra and a traditional cypress instrument. If my Poca Loca eventually attains a similar timbre, I will be fully satisfied. I tried several new and used flamencos, but I couldn't find anything to compare with Breslin's price/performance-- $2,600 for a very nice, traditional flamenco, created by a long-time builder who also plays flamenco, built specifically for your hand, eye and ear-- OLE! |
